Sayulita's Water Quality Improves: Safe for Swimming and Enjoying the Beach

Sayulita, Mexico, has been a popular destination for surfers and beachgoers for years. However, up until recently, the water quality has been a cause for concern. Before 2019, the town's wastewater treatment plant was facing some significant issues, leading to the dumping of untreated water onto the beach. This made swimming unsafe and posed a threat to the environment. Fortunately, the plant has been upgraded, and the situation has improved significantly.

At that moment (2018) the treatment plant could only handle 20-30 liters per second, which was not enough to meet the demand during peak tourist seasons. However, the plant since some years ago has been upgraded to process up to 80 liters per second, making it much more efficient. With the installation of the emissor pipe, treated water is now being emitted into the deep ocean, rather than onto the beach.

The government of Nayarit has tested the water quality and found that it is safe for swimming, with enterococci levels well below the limit set by the government. This means that Sayulita is now the only beach town in the area that does not dump grey water directly onto the beach.

This upgrade would not have been possible without the actions of Grupo Pro Sayulita, who took the initiative to get studies in place, engineering plans, and apply for permits. The local community also played a significant role in funding the project, and the newly elected Mexican State and Federal government took over the project and have been working diligently to bring about its completion.
